Liverpool striker Fernando Torres knows what it’s like to deal with a niggling hamstring injury. So instead of pushing for his captain to make a speedy return, Torres has just one thing to say to Steven Gerrard: Take it easy, mate!
“Stevie doesn’t have a substitute at Liverpool,” said Torres. It’s his name first on the teamsheet then 10 others.
“Stevie is the lad every great side has – our leader, the one-club man. But I know from experience hamstring problems are risky. If you get one there’s nothing you can do but let it repair.” (ESPN Soccernet)
Torres is right. While Gerrard could miss the critical Champions League clash against Real Madrid, Rafa Benitez knows that while Europe means a lot, this season is all about the league. Gerrard is Liverpool’s most important piece, so the club will want to make sure he’s completely healed before returning to the pitch. They don’t want another Torres incident at this point in the season.
