When the draw for the fifth round of the FA Cup was made, it appeared that Everton had a pretty tall order to make it through to the quarter finals. They were underdogs to beat Liverpool in a 4th round replay at Goodison Park, while Aston Villa’s away form this season meant that reaching the last eight would represent a fantastic opportunity to win silverware.
Thanks to a couple of terrific performances, that’s exactly where David Moyes’ team find themselves after the weekend, with an attractive home tie against Middlesbrough or West Ham for a place in the semi-finals. Setanta reports that Mikel Arteta believes his team have a chance of repeating their 1995 success, especially after avoiding Chelsea and Manchester United in the next round.
“I think we have a chance, if we keep in good form and keep playing the way we have been playing in the last few months I think we have got a real chance,” Arteta told Setanta Sports.
“I think we played very well, we were struggling to put out our first XI because of injuries and suspensions and everything we have been through all season.
“But again the team spirit was unbelievable and when we find it difficult we play another gear and showed that again today.
“It is massive [to reach the quarter finals], after the Liverpool game it was massive for us but now we keep going in the cup as that is the only way that we can win a trophy with Everton so we have to keep going.”
It was an accomplished performance from Everton, with the defence once again keeping things tight against the counter-attacking Villans, and the likes of Arteta, Cahill and Rodwell shining for the Toffees. Even a semi-final match against Chelsea or a weakened Manchester United team should hold no fear for the Merseyside club at the moment, do you think they could go all the way?
