It’s fairly clear that the Red Devils are going to win the Premier League this season, while the Carling Cup final against Tottenham should also mean another piece of silverware for Manchester United. However, one bookmaker is so convinced that the champions are going to win these competitions and the FA Cup, that they have already settled bets on them as winners!
Call it generous, call it stupid, call it a ridiculous attempt to get some publicity for a brief spell, but Paddy Power have forked out around £1 million paying out customers who have backed United to win any domestic competition this season (apart from the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy). Sky News reports that the Irish firm have seen enough from Sir Alex Ferguson’s team to think that they have all the silverware bar the Champions League sewn up.
“Teams can’t even score against United at the moment so what hope have they of catching them?” a spokesman told Sky News Online.
“Nobody can touch them, they look unbeatable in England anyway. We’re going to have to rely on somebody from Europe stopping them in the Champions League.”
It’s strange to think that Manchester United looked far from invincible when losing 2-1 to Arsenal back in November, although they have subsequently embarked on a brilliant run of victories and clean sheets to take them close to the domestic treble. What do you make of this bookmaker’s decision to pay out? Does it reflect the supremacy of the champions, or is there not much difference between them, Liverpool or Chelsea?
