Liverpool have to once again make the switch from the Champions League mindset back to the league this weekend as they get set to travel for a critical match against Middlesbrough at the Riverside. It’s too bad that they’re going to have to do it without the services of one of their best players.
Rafa Benitez said: ‘I do not expect Fernando to play at Middlesbrough. He picked up an ankle injury in the first minute of our win in the Bernabeu and he struggled on until we replaced him in the second half with Ryan Babel’s pace and fresh legs.Torres was increasingly uncomfortable.
‘However, I do expect him to be back for the second leg against Real in a fortnight. And there is a good chance that Steven Gerrard will be able to play at Middlesbrough. We were not prepared to take the risk on his hamstring injury until those final minutes in Madrid.’ (Daily Mail)
It really has been a rough season for Fernando Torres. After his maiden voyage in the Premier League produced goals aplenty and few injuries, his second season in the league has produced almost the opposite. Whilst the goals have still been coming in, Torres has dealt with numerous injuries this season that have left him as a serious doubt on numerous occasions. But even with Torres out, Liverpool supporters can breathe a huge sigh of relief knowing Steven Gerrard could feature this weekend.
Losing Torres and gaining Gerrard seems like a fine swap, but when are they going to feature on the pitch at the same time? It seems like we haven’t seen the two together in ages. I’m sure supporters are hoping that the next time they see both on the pitch it will be against Real Madrid in a fortnight.
Can Liverpool make do with just Gerrard this weekend against Boro?
