Arsenal to make £10m move for Premier League STAR?!

Will Wenger really make such a large bid for this Premier League new boy?

Arsenal will test Newcastle’s resolve to hang on to star defender Sebastien Bassong with a £10million summer offer.

The Magpies want to extend the France Under-21 star’s existing contract beyond its 2011 expiry date, but fear relegation could cost them their prize asset.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has been tracking Bassong’s impressive progress since his cut-price summer move from Metz, which Toon chairman Derek Llambias claims cost Newcastle just £500,000. (Sunday Mirror)

Some may feel that Arsenal could do with another central defender at the club but i don’t feel that there need is so great as to have to make such a big bid for this Newcastle lad. With Gallas, Toure and Djourou to call upon and with Senderos due to return from the San Siro the club has a decent array of players to fill the position and whilst Bassong has a great reputation (a product of the famed Clairefontaine academy that gave us the likes Anelka, Henry,Gallas and Saha to name just four) i don’t see Wenger bidding so highly for the former Metz man, perhaps if the fee was substantially lower then perhaps. He also plays at left back but once again thats a position that is well and truly covered at the Emirates. Do Gunners fans think any such deal would take place?
