Someone explain the logic in this please!
MIDDLESBROUGH are ready to spark a three-way scrap for Stewart Downing by selling the England winger in January.
Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City will fight it out for Downing and if they match Boro’s £12million asking fee, will land the 24-year-old.
Club chiefs have fought off bids from Spurs and Rafa Benitez in the past but Sport of the World understands they are now receptive to a top offer. (News of the World)
Well apparently Liverpool are top of the list when it comes to chasing this very overrated England international, but why? They already have Albert Riera, who has been a very useful signing, as well as Ryan Babel who still has a great deal of potential. Downing’s continued appearance in rumour speculation pieces for a good few years says it all, after all up until now no one has stumped up the cash for the severely one footed wideman.
Man City have oddles of cash and will surely opt for megastars over a player who continually fails to impress and has only attracted attention because he is a big fish in a small pond. Spurs are now utilising Luka Modric excellently on the left as a roaming midfielder whilst using the pace and trickery of Lennon on the right, so not sure they would need to make a move for Stewart. I would predict that none of these big teams actually go all in for the 24 year old and that he will either move to a team far lower down the Premier League ladder or he will stay at the Riverside.
Do fans of any of these three teams want to see their clubs splash such a large sum of money on Downing?
