The Rumour

Guillem Balague has said Liverpool and Juventus are the frontrunners to sign David Silva this summer.

The midfielder looks certain to leave Valencia at the end of the season, with Los Che desperatue for the money, and Balague believes Anfield could be his destination.

The Sky Sports expert stated “Fernando Gomez, Valencia’s Director of Football, has basically said they will not be able to keep David Silva and David Villa.

“They will try to keep one but the general idea is to find finances from their sales.

“They are in a really bad way financially. Villa has been linked with Barcelona – although some papers claim Perez wants him at Real – while Silva is likely to go to either Juventus or Liverpool.”

The Analysis

There are few football pundits more well informed about the Spanish game than Guillem and he is one of the respected journalists who i take heed to when i read rumour mill stories and he rarely gets it wrong. Valencia are in huge financial turmoil, and they will have to sell some and perhaps all of their big star names.

Liverpool is of course chock-a-bloc with Spaniards, five full Spanish internationals at the last count, and many have debated that nippy intelligent attacker David Silva could well fill the hole alongside or just behind El Nino. Surely if the choice for the 23 year old was Liverpool or Juventus he wouldn’t think twice. The Old Lady of Italian football seems pretty long in the tooth and is way off the Serie A title pace.

There are of course questions around whether the slightly built Silva could hack it in the rough and tumble of the English game but i think many felt the same about Fernando Torres and i don’t think it would be a problem. The Valencia man strikes me as the kind of player that could take Rafa’s team from title pretenders to out and out challengers.

The Likelihood

David Silva to Liverpool: A very real possibility.
