The Rumour

Wolves hope to make Standard Liege defender Oguchi Onyewu, 27, their first Premier League signing.

Boss Mick McCarthy will splash £3million on the 6ft 4in giant, who has won 40 caps for the United States and had a spell on loan at Newcastle in 2007.

The Analysis

Now this is the kind of buy that makes great sense for a team getting ready for another stab at Premier League football. Mick McCarthy’s men were not exactly watertight in defence in the Championship, in fact they conceded considerably more than the teams who finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the table, so the signing of this impressive American could go a long way to resolving the problem.

Every time i have seen Onyewu in action he has looked pretty solid and is the kind of player who gives confidence to those around him. He helped his Standard Liege side to the Belgian title last term and within touching distance of repeating the feat this term. He did okay when on loan to Newcastle a couple of years ago and i feel he would be a terrific purchase.

The Likelihood

Onyewu to Wolves: Probable.
