It took a while, but the Daily Mail have finished this very very long list!
10 Steve Marlet (Lyon to Fulham, £11.5m – 2001)
8 Michael Owen (Real Madrid to Newcastle, £16m – 2005)
6 Sergei Rebrov
(Dynamo Kiev to Spurs, £11m – 2000)
5 Bosko Balaban (Dinamo Zagreb to Aston Villa, £5.8 – 2001)
4 Massimo Taibi (Venezia to Man Utd, £4.4m – 1999)
3 Thomas Brolin (Parma to Leeds, £4.5m – 1995)
2 Andriy Shevchenko (AC Milan to Chelsea, £31m – 2006)
It’s very hard to argue with those in the final ten, they have all been terrible signings but i think that Veron is a deserved winner (or loser if you prefer) of this esteemed countdown. Many names on this list have become synonymous with the art of poorly planned transfers.
Some on the list never recovered from the stigma that was attached as a result of these transfers. Franny Jeffers was never the same again, Steve Marlet’s career fizzed out. Segei Rebrov’s career took a turn for the better in the past year as he helped his Russian side Rubin Kazan to the title. Juan Sebastian Veron’s career has also recently reached something of a nadir as he helped improve the fortunes of Estudiantes and he was named South American Football of the Year in 2008 and was even recently recalled to the Argentine national team. It remains to be seen whether the likes of Michael Owen, Joey Barton and Andriy Shevchenko can reignite their careers.
For anyone who may be interested, Tomas Brolin is now something of a success on the World Poker Tour scene! Clearly the rotund figure which became the subject of much abuse does not interfere with his new sporting arena.
So, what do you make of this final installment?
