ATHLETIC BILBAO’S midfield sensation Javi Martinez is a summer target for Liverpool.
The Spain Under-21 star, 20, has a £24million buy-out clause but the Basque club will do business for closer to £12m.
Anfield boss Rafa Benitez has kept an eye on the rangy playmaker’s meteoric rise to first-team regular and sent his spies to watch Martinez in Wednesday’s 4-1 Spanish Cup final loss to Barcelona.

Lanky Martinez doesn’t look like a cultured midfielder but don’t be fooled by the 6 ft 3 inch frame this Bilbao man is a talented prospect and as he is Spanish he is therefore duty bound to be linked with Liverpool, the club with more Spaniards than you can count on the fingers of one hand.
He has the look and feel of a roughened version of Xabi Alonso and he is the jewel in the Basque Club’s crown and that is why they would probably hold out for a bigger offer than the one proposed by this source. A move for a player with great potential would surely be a better bet than going for Aston Villa stalwart Gareth Barry?
A move for the Villa man would unsettle and irritate Xabi but a move for Javi may well by just the ticket for Benitez as the 20 year old could be used sparingly at first and could develop into a world class player.
Javi Martinez: I have a sneaking suspicion that this move will happen in the summer.
