Emiraters supporters should look away now!
Arsene Wenger’s summer transfer budget has been slashed to £13million by the board in a move that is likely to infuriate already iriate Arsenal fans.
Wenger, whose team last won a trophy in 2005, was given the news shortly before the noisy exchange with shareholders last Thursday, in which many fans questioned the manager’s judgment for the first time in his 13 years at the club.
Any income Wenger can raise from sales will be added to his transfer fund. Some additional money, on top of the £13m, has also been allocated to complete the re-signings of Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie.
Both players are expected to sign four-year contracts with Arsenal this summer and Fabregas is likely to command a £3m signing-on fee. (Daily Mail)
This is not good news for Arsene Wenger and may well be the kind of news that makes the Arsenal boss consider his future at the club. Given the lack of success in recent years and the comparative lack of spending it is bound to anger Gunners fans.
£13m isn’t very much in football terms and won’t stretch very far as the club looks to bring in a much needed centre back and defensive midfielder and perhaps a competent second keeper to boot so it does seem increasingly likely that the club will have to sell in order to improve the squad for 09/10.
Adebayor could well be the first to leave and not many fans would lose sleep over such a scenario and if the club can get the projected £20-25m for his services then all the better.
What do Arsenal fans make of this news of a lack of funds being made available?
