Not good news for the blue half of Manchester!
Stephen Ireland insists he is a long way from signing a new Manchester City contract, a statement sure to alert other top clubs.
Ireland, 22, has been told his outstanding form this season will be rewarded with an improvement to his present deal worth £26,000 a week.
City boss Mark Hughes, who was yesterday warned by the club’s Arab owners that he must target a top-six finish in the Barclays Premier League next year, had hinted that an agreement was close.
However, the Irish midfielder claims his future is in doubt. Ireland said: ‘We’re still a long way off. I don’t know what’s going to happen and if I’m going to sign or not sign.
‘It’s up to the club, not me. I think I’ve done enough this year, let my football do the talking. If they make me an offer, then great. If not, then I’ve got two years left.’ (Daily Mail)
This is news that Eastlands fans will not be happy to hear. I was under the impression that this was pretty much a done deal and that the hugely improved attacking midfielder was just about to sign up to a huge pay rise, now it appears that this is not the case. Of course it could just be a bit of posturing from both sides as they try to come to a compromise over pay but the quotes attributed to Stephen Ireland will surely worry Man City fans.
The 22 year old has been in fine form this season and would be welcomed with open arms from the sides in the ‘Big Four’ so if i were Mark Hughes i would make sure that this is sorted sooner rather than later, preferably before the transfer window re-opens!
