Wigan to Rescue Liverpool Flop’s Career: Is Bruce making a mistake?

The Rumour

Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce hopes to trump Portsmouth for on-loan Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant.

The Daily Mail says the 26-year-old winger’s Anfield contract is not being extended and he will be a free agent when his Portsmouth loan expires at the end of the week.

Bruce is looking to sign a replacement for Antonio Valencia and remains a big admirer of Pennant, having signed him for Birmingham from Arsenal.

The Analysis

You have to admire the managerial acumen that Steve Bruce possesses and his ability to deal with a crisis. It appears that the Latics boss is resigned to losing Antonio Valencia in the summer and has already had to deal with the likes of Palacios, Heskey and Ryan Taylor all leaving in January and will almost certainly not try to sign top scorer Amr Zaki on a permanent deal which leaves the JJB side looking in danger or being left with only the scaps of the squad that started the season so well.

He will be taking a risk if he brings in Jermaine Pennant, but its a calculated risk that will at least not merit a transfer fee and Bruce proved before that he can handle the former Arsenal man who arguably had the best spell of his career when at St Andrews.

The Likelihood

Pennant to Wigan: Apparently the wide man is considering a move to La Liga, but if that falls through then a reunion with his former boss may well occur.
