Liverpool and Manchester City are stepping up their interest in AC Milan midfielder Yoann Gourcuff.
The 22 year-old is starring on-loan at Bordeaux this season and both Liverpool and City had scouts check on the midfielder in action against Le Mans on Sunday.
Bordeaux has first option on Gourcuff, but are struggling to raise the £12 million needed to sign the player permanently from Milan.

Yoann Gourcuff’s career was in danger of petering out at the San Siro and his move to Bordeaux was as successful as it was timely. The former Rennes man was more or less a forgotten man when he was whisked off to join Laurent Blanc’s side and he has taken them to within touching distance of their first French title in a decade but if the Aquitaine based side can’t afford to clinch his signature permanently then the club’s loss could well be Liverpool‘s gain.
The skillful midfielder has great touch and an eye for goal and at 22 is the type of player who could just get better and better and would greatly benefit Rafa’s squad. Whereas the continued chasing of Gareth Barry seemed somewhat short sighted given the far more talented Xabi Alonso being available to Benitez, the capture of Gourcuff could well work wonders as he can fill a number of roles at the club. He could play in the traditional central midfielder role, or he could play in a more attacking role and perhaps ease the reliance on Steven Gerrard.
Gourcuff to Liverpool: Such a move could take place, but it could depend on whether AC Milan feel he could do a job for them now that he has rejuvenated his career in France.
