Anfield fans look away now!
Rafael Benitez has long been an admirer of the England winger and now that Middlesbrough have dropped to the Championship, he may be able to get his man. Albert Riera has looked decent but a stronger left winger would help Liverpool’s bid for the Premier League title next season. 24-year-old Downing would cost in the region of £12m and Middlesbrough have announced they are willing to let the international leave.

This is one of those rumours that Liverpool fans must really hope is pure speculation with no element of truth whatsoever!
Stewart Downing is by no means a great player and is in my opinion frankly average but the way newspapers and pundits link him with every big side in the top tier you would think he was a big deal. He is ludicrously one footed and can’t beat a man for pace, granted he can cross a ball but not particularly consistently and the fact he hasn’t left the Riverside says more about the lack of genuine interest rather than his loyalty to Middlesbrough.
It wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up staying at the club as they attempt to bounce back from the Championship, something that will be a damn sight easier if they finally sack Gareth Southgate before the season starts!
It would be far more advantageous for the Merseyside club to consider making a move for young winger Adam Johnson instead because he is a player who shows a great deal of potential.
Downing to Liverpool: Thankfully for Reds fans I am confident Benitez will not pursue the chase.
