This deal seems to be very much on the cards.
Liverpool are determined to hold on to Xabi Alonso despite the midfield player’s desire to move to Real Madrid. Sources at Anfield indicated that it would take a “mind-blowing” offer by the Spanish giants to prise the 27-year-old away from the club.
Florentino Pérez, the Real president, told The Times yesterday of his interest in Alonso. “Xabi is a magnificent Spanish player, so of course we’d love to have him,” Pérez said. “But everything would involve reaching an agreement with Rafael Benítez. It will need to be an agreement that is in the best interests of both clubs.”

If this source is indeed accurate and these quotes correct then it does very much look like Liverpool are preparing themselves for a Xabi departure. For a team to come out and essentially invite offers, albeit “mind blowing” ones then it kind of tells it’s own story.
Of course Rafa doesn’t want to lose the inspirational midfielder but Alonso has made it clear in recent weeks that he intends to leave and return to his native Spain so in many ways the best thing the Merseyside club can do is make sure they are adequately compensated for a talented midfielder with three years left on his contract.
The figure of £22m has been sounded out by Real Madrid and that could well be just about the right price for Benitez to consider. This move becomes even more likely as the Anfield side needs money from sales to really make a dent in the transfer market.
Alonso to Real Madrid: It seems likes it’s only a matter of time before this becomes a reality.
