Arsenal Target Ready to Make £8m Premier League move

Decent midfielder wants move to England.

The Rumour

Sports News - February 15, 2009

Tranquillo Barnetta admits he’s ready to leave Bayer Leverkusen for the Premiership.

The 24-year-old reportedly turned down the chance to join Portsmouth in January while Arsenal were said to have showed interest in March.

Despite his eagerness to test himself in England, Barnetta indicates that any deal will not be done overnight.

“I would like to play in the Premier League, the club is aware of that,” he told SI.

The Analysis

Having seen his Bundesliga side fall way off the pace this season it appears the Swiss international who has been linked with a move to Arsenal for 18 months or more, is ready to leave Bayer Leverkusen after four years at the club.

Wenger dearly needs an experienced midfielder to pull the defensive strings alongside Cesc Fabregas and I am not sure Barnetta is the man for the job. He is a far more tricky player with good touch and vision but not the kind of player to put in tough tackling and breaking down the opposition attacks.

He could well be a big hit in the Premier League but I don’t see him making an impact at the Emirates as there are already many players at the north London club who are as good if not better than Tranquilo who already sit on the club’s bench.
