North London Rivals fight it out for talented Newcastle man.
Arsenal and Tottenham are set to start a bidding war for Newcastle defender Sebastien Bassong.
The 22-year-old, a £500,000 buy from Metz last year, was one of the few Magpies players to impress last season.
However, with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley keen to off load the club the time may be right for a bid before any prospective buyers step in.
St James’ Park bosses will test the water with an asking price of around £12million for the French star and while the London rivals might flinch at the price the prospect of Bassong hanging around looks unlikely.

Sebastien Bassong showed his qualities at Newcastle United last season as all around him lost their heads and it seems highly unlikely he will still be at St James’ Park when the Championship season kicks off.
Arsene Wenger has been trailing the young Frenchman for some time and now it appears Harry Redknapp is sniffing around the centre back who can also do a good job at full back. Both north London rivals have defensive frailties to overcome.
At Arsenal the problems last season seem to revolve around William Gallas. The former Chelsea man upset many of his teammates with some of his outbursts and Kolo Toure’s form dipped wildly and could even leave the club such was the effect of the in fighting at the club. Tottenham‘s centre back problems were more in relation to injury problems that seem to haunt Ledley King and have caused Woodgate some problems in the past also.
Bassong to Arsenal or Spurs: My money is on an Emirates move with Redknapp looking elsewhere.
