The Rumour

Karim Benzema Press Conference - Lyon

SIR ALEX FERGUSON is ready to splash £25million on Lyon’s Karim Benzema after finally admitting defeat over keeping Carlos Tevez.

Manchester United officially ended negotiations with Tevez’s representative Kia Joorabchian – and have targeted France striker Benzema. Lyon have admitted that a £25m offer would be enough to tempt them.

The Analysis

Everyone knows that Man United now have money to burn after they managed to get more than their money’s worth out of Cristiano Ronaldo and therefore expect the club to be linked with just about every high profile player left to sign.

Sir Alex has been monitoring Karim Benzema for some time and now may be the opportune time to strike. Lyon lost their grip on the French title and with it may have lost the ability to keep the very talented young French striker. He has proven himself to be a goal machine in Ligue 1 but of course many would doubt his ability to do likewise in the far superior Premier League. For anyone who thinks this way I would encourage them to look at Benzema’s record in the Champions League, where he has managed 12 goals in 19 starts, therefore proving he has what it takes to be a smash hit at the highest level.

In many ways its a potential signing that could rock the boat at Old Trafford. Now that Ronaldo has left, Wayne Rooney can again be picked in his preferred striking position rather than out on the left and of course he is more than likely to be consistently partnered with Dimitar Berbatov. Bringing in the 21 year old Lyon man could unbalance the team in a similar way that Tevez threatened to do so. Clearly Ferguson could do with another top level striker to keep his first choice pair on their toes but perhaps someone less likely to muddy the waters would make more sense.

The Likelihood

Benzema to Man United: I think Sir Alex will give this move a miss.
