Manchester United To Make Record Breaking £40m Striker Move

Spanish star tops Sir Alex’s Wish-list!

SOCCER: JUN 17 Confederation Cup - Iraq v Spain

The Rumour

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is on red alert to make a £40million bid for Spain striker David Villa after Barcelona opened the auction last night.

Fergie wants Villa above all other options as he looks to replace the lost goals of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez and he’s poised to match any Barca offer.

The canny Old Trafford chief – back from a break in France – has been monitoring the Villa race since he sold Ronaldo and passed on Tevez. And now he’s going in with a rival bid.

The Analysis

Sir Alex wants to spend! Having seen Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo leave the club he knows that it is imperative that he brings in some attacking talent. Man United are hot the heels of a number of top notch signings and seem pretty likely to bring in Wigan winger Luis Antonio Valencia and now Ferguson wants to add David Villa to his wishlist.

The Spanish international is a veritable goal machine and Valencia have appeared to have admitted defeat and look set to sell their big names and have already parted with centre back Raul Albiol and could well also offload David Silva in order to improve their financial problems.

Such a signing will of course cause something of a headache in the striking positions at Old Trafford in much the same way as Carlito’s presence did. It would be very hard to somehow play Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and another striker at the same time so in many ways the signing of a winger to replace Cristiano is a much bigger priority.

The Likelihood

David Villa to Man United: Could well opt to stay in Spain with a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona.
