Liverpool Close In On Impressive £15m Mascherano Replacement

Rafa prepares for a rainy day!

The Rumour

SOCCER: JUN 25 Confederations Cub - Brazil v South Africa

Arsenal face stiff competition for Fiorentina midfielder Felipe Melo.

The Sunday Times says Melo has also attracted interest from Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool, who see him as a potential replacement for Javier Mascherano or Xabi Alonso.

Arsenal are now in talks with Fiorentina over a fee for the midfielder.

The Analysis

Felipe Melo has been the subject of a great deal of interest from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and now the Fiorentina midfielder has become a target of several other clubs who may have been impressed with his recent performances at the Confederations Cup.

The battling defensive player would be an ideal candidate to replace Javier Mascherano if Liverpool were unlucky enough to lose him and this source’s claim that he would be a replacement for Xabi Alonso are a little misguided.

The 26 year old has become a key part of La Viola’s Serie A campaign and helped his Florence club qualify for the Champions League next term and though his agent says he is happy to stay even his club teammate Alberto Gilardino has suggested that he expects Felipe to leave. Given that Rafa’s current best replacement for Javier would be the below average Lucas I would hope for the fans sake that should the Argentine leave for Real Madrid or Barcelona that the club gets its hands on a player of the quality of Melo.

The Likelihood

Melo to Liverpool: Like so many other signings on the horizon this one would depend on players leaving first. The Brazilian is however the type of player who would thrive in the Premier League.
