The Rumour

EVERTON boss David Moyes is planning another raid on Manchester United – for Paul Scholes.

Moyes wants to add the former England midfielder to three former Old Trafford recruits – Tim Howard, Phil Neville and Louis Saha.

Scholes, 34, is no longer a regular choice at United and Moyes hopes Sir Alex Ferguson will consider releasing him.

The worry for Everton, though, is that the United boss suggests a deal which takes Goodison midfielder Jack Rodwell, 19, to Old Trafford.

The Analysis

Everton rate Jack Rodwell in the £10-12m bracket so one would imagine that if such a swap deal were to take place then Sir Alex would have to fork out a great portion of that figure to go with the veteran Man United midfielder. It’s an interesting deal but perhaps not one that Toffees fans will be wholly happy about.

Scholes has at best two maybe three years left in the tank and there is no denying he can still have an impact at the highest level but clearly Rodwell is a teenager who has shown some very real promise and potential and is an England midfielder in the making.

Moyes clearly is good friends with his Scottish counterpart hence the repeated visits to Old Trafford to pick up bargain buys but this deal would be a tough one to secure unless the Goodison boss can also get a good amount of cash into the bargain. The danger is that such talk of a big move for the youngster could now turn his head and that is something the manager will have to be careful of.

The Likelihood

Rodwell swap deal with Scholes: Possible but Jack would do well to stake his claim at Everton for a few seasons yet, otherwise he could get lost in the sea of talent at the Premier League title holders.
