Manchester United Make Late Move for Excellent £52m Strike Duo

Fergie plans double forward swoop!

Sports News - January 19, 2009

The Rumour

Manchester United are also considering making a shock late move to bring Tevez back to Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson failed in his initial attempts to seal a deal to prolong the striker’s Old Trafford stay. But the United boss may yet make an improved offer.

Doubts have also been cast over the deal to bring Barcelona’s £25-rated Cameroon striker Eto’o to City. Reports in the Spanish media claim he has rejected a new two-year Barca deal.

The 28-year-old’s likely destination appears to be City or United.

Fergie is a big admirer of Eto’o and is willing to use a large chunk of the £80m Cristiano Ronaldo cash to sign the former Real Mallorca man.

The Analysis

This is interesting, if indeed it is accurate, which lets face it isn’t that likely given the source. Man City reportedly gave up on Samuel Eto’o today as they had enough of waiting for him to make up his mind, this however could be a ruse to try to get the Barcelona man to get his act together. The Nou Camp management have agreed they have tried to contact the Cameroonian striker in the last few days but he hasn’t been answering his phone and now this source suggests that Sir Alex may come in with an eleventh hour bid.

Less likely surely are the chances of Man United trying again to get Carlos Tevez on a permanent deal, not least because the Argentine has bad mouthed Ferguson in the press and generally whined ever since he left. Good player no doubt but becoming less and less of a fans favourite every time he opens his mouth!

Having missed out on Benzema and Huntelaar Ferguson still wants another striker so that he can have that coveted foursome he can call upon for what will inevitably be a 60 game season for the club, but surely a really big name would simply unsettle those already at Old Trafford?

The Likelihood

Eto/Tevez to Man Utd: Don’t see either of these happening.
