Liverpool Boss Begs Midfield Duo to Give Him One Last Season

Benitez calls for loyalty and one more big push!

LIVERPOOL will make a last-ditch plea to want-away stars Javier Mascherano and Xabi Alonso: “Stay one more year and we’ll Kop the title.”

Boss Rafa Benitez plans to tell the midfielders if they pledge their future to the club – even for just this season – he is confident they will be rewarded with the Premier League crown.

And Liverpool are feeling upbeat about their chances. Manchester United have lost Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, while Chelsea are having to adapt to another new manager for the third straight season.

Mascherano and Alonso are coming under mounting pressure from Liverpool fans to state their intentions. (News of the World)

Benitez really is looking for both players to come out once and for all and say they are not planning on leaving the club but will they reciprocate? Alonso sat on the fence when he stated that he would be happy to stay at Anfield and was also happy with the interest shown by Real Madrid whereas Javier Mascherano seems to have done much of his talking through his agent.

The summer is always an unstable time for clubs and their star talent but it seems the fate of these two talented midfielders is balanced on a knife edge and I can understand why the Liverpool boss is calling for some closure on the issue but it’s very unlikely he will get it anytime soon.

Xabi has repeatedly referenced the high tax rate paid by big earners in the UK as if this gives him a get out clause, but then to be fair Rafa was all for selling him last summer so in many ways it would be unfair to ask him to commit to the club given that he was considered as little more than fodder to help make a Gareth Barry bid that came to nothing.
