Making up for lost time, O’Neill looks to start spending Mr. Lerner’s cash!
MARTIN O’NEILL aims to complete a £24m double move for Darren Bent and Stewart Downing this week.
Villa boss O’Neill is set to move into transfer overdrive after a quiet summer at Villa Park.
And he is ready to blow Sunderland out of the water with a £12m offer for Spurs ace Bent.
O’Neill is in the market for a forward with Marlon Harewood keen to leave and teenager Nathan Delfouneso available on loan.

Villa fans have been bemoaning the fact that the club hasn’t been getting close to securing some big names this summer and were worried that the money made from the Gareth Barry sale would simply be placed in Randy Lerner’s back pocket, well this source suggests that Martin O’Neill is close to snapping up two England internationals.
Darren Bent has suffered as a result of the huge price Martin Jol forked out to sign him, something the former Charlton man could do nothing about, but has in fact not been a bad signing and in his two seasons at the club he has come in for some harsh treatment, not least from Harry Redknapp.
Stewart Downing is not a player I rate and the only reason I could imagine Aston Villa considering purchasing the Boro man is in case Ashley Young leaves the club and if that is the case the fans will not be happy with this capture as it would scarcely make up for such a big loss!
Downing/Bent to Aston Villa: The Spurs striker is also being chased by Sunderland but may opt for a move to a top six chasing side, and supporters will be hoping that speculation linking them to the ludicrously one footed winger is just paper talk!
