Midfielder makes it abundantly clear he wants to leave the club.
Xabi Alonso has been told he must make an official transfer request to show everyone how keen he is to leave Liverpool and join Real Madrid.
The 27-year-old has explained to Anfield manager Rafa Benitez in a phone call that he wants to join the new collection of galacticos at the Bernabeu following the recent return of Florentino Perez as president.

So Rafa is forced to take this path with Xabi Alonso, which was inevitable but nonetheless probably not how the Liverpool boss wanted to see this happen. The Spanish midfielder is very keen on a move to Real Madrid and I guess Benitez asking for a formal request at least lays the burden of blame for wanting such a move firmly on the player’s shoulders.
The next thing that needs to happen is for Real Madrid to put in a realistic bid for the midfield maestro and this may be where it gets messy. They will almost certainly milk this all they can. Jorge Valdano mischievoulsy claimed his club were thinking of ending their spending spree, knowing full well this is probably not the case, in order to push the Anfield outfit into lowering their valuation in order to complete the sale rather than holding onto a player who wishes to leave.
The ball is now in the Bernabeu sides court, the Merseyside club doesn’t need to sell for anything less than they believe Alonso to be worth, and if the deal collapses it will be firmly down to the La Liga giants trying to force the club into a corner. Clearly Real Madrid have money to burn and stating that they do not would just make them look foolish.
