Spurs Open Talks with Former Arsenal Captain!

I didn’t see this one coming!

SOCCER: MAR 11 UEFA Champions League - Manchester United v Internazionale

The Rumour

Tottenham have opened talks on the controversial signing of former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira.
Manager Harry Redknapp has sanctioned talks with the 33-year-old French star and hopes a free transfer can be completed.
A one-year contract is on the table and Spurs are challenging Vieira to take a massive drop in salary to prove his commitment.

A pay-as-you-play deal is on offer and, according to sources in Italy, Vieira is so keen for the chance to work with Redknapp that he is willing to accept wages of around £35,000 a week, a massive reduction on his Inter Milan deal where he is among their highest paid players.

The Analysis

Well this an interesting prospect, but could it really happen? Patrick Vieira is of course an Arsenal legend but would that stand in the way of him moving to White Hart Lane? The Inter Milan midfielder is now a bit part player at the Serie A champions and may fancy one more big payday before he hangs up his boots and a move to the Premier League could be what he is looking for.

Many had thought the 33 year old would opt to end his career in France but a number of English clubs have been chasing the once world class battler, including Birmingham City and now Spurs. Perhaps Wenger would consider signing the former favourite on a short term deal? He would resolve the lack of an experienced defensive midfielder in the squad, albeit this would only be a short term solution.

If he does move to join Harry Redknapp’s side I would have thought that Gunners fans wouldn’t berate him as a lot of water has passed under the bridge since he left the Emirates club in 2005 and he was such an integral part of the peak successes under Arsene that he will always be warmly received by the Arsenal fans.
