Benitez makes big money winger bid
RAFA BENITEZ and Martin O’Neill will go head-to-head again in a £20million battle for Ashley Young.
Aston Villa are bracing themselves for Liverpool’s offer for England winger Young, although O’Neill has warned potential bidders to expect ‘short shrift’.
That will not deter Kop boss Benitez, who is also on the verge of winning his fight to keep midfielder Xabi Alonso.
The lure of a Premier League title challenge and Champions League action at Anfield will be tough for Young to resist, especially in a World Cup season.

Martin O’Neill’s capture of Stewart Downing was more or less an admission that Ashley Young had made it clear he wanted to leave the club otherwise why invest £12m on a left winger when you already have one of the best in the Premier League?
Clearly this is why a queue of clubs have started to make an asserted effort to snap up the England international and now it appears only the issue of a fee for the former Watford man is in question. Liverpool boss is thought to want to inject some more natural width into his team but many had thought that it was the right hand side that needed strengthening more than the left where Benitez had only purchased Albert Riera last summer.
Young is an excellent player with great speed and ability and also weighs in with his fair share of goals and it’s easy to see why so many clubs are willing to break the bank for the 24 year old.
Young to Liverpool: Well so far the Merseyside club are the biggest to come out and make an offer so could well be heading the queue.
