Time for Dutchman to prove his worth
Rafa Benitez has tipped Ryan Babel to finally fulfil his potential and make an impact in the Premier League this season.
The Dutch winger has only shown flashes of what he is capable of so far during his two seasons at Anfield but Liverpool boss Benitez believes the coming season will be the one in which the 22-year-old makes everyone take notice.
Benitez says the winger looks in good shape in training and senses an improvement in his mentality this summer.
”We are really impressed with him this year because he came back after the summer really fit, he’s trying to do his best and it is very positive when you have a player with talent,” Benitez said.
”The first two years is always difficult in another country but I think if you have the right mentality like he has now, he will improve.” (Eatsleepsport.com)
Ryan Babel has the ability to make a name for himself at Anfield and in many ways that’s what so frustrating for most Liverpool fans. It’s one thing identifying a player who hasn’t got what it takes and then just waiting for said player to be offloaded but when you can see that a player, like the Dutch winger, display all the attributes that are needed to be a top notch performer and then stand by and watch from the terraces as once again a storming 50 yard run is ruined by a poor cross or a fluffed finish.
The former Ajax man was billed as the next Thierry Henry when he first arrived two seasons ago and in his first term he showed that in cameo bursts he could turn a game with one powerful run but then he took a step backwards in his second season and seemed to confirm to most that he couldn’t perform for 90 minutes, or even 60 minutes without vanishing from games.
This appears to be his last chance to prove to Benitez that he has it in him to be a success and I am sure many would consider a Babel firing on all cylinders would almost constitute a new signing for the title chasers.
