Liverpool Set for £23m Silva Heartache?

COS’s Anfield Correspondent considers the possiblity of a dream deal not coming to fruition.

MANCHESTER UNITED V VALENCIA CF

Is a move for David Silva imminent? That is the question being asked by supporters of both Liverpool and Manchester United on this website. The rumour mill seems to have been working overtime on this one and we have even seen comments posted on the site claiming that a deal has already been done with the Valencia player: with fans of both North West clubs believing he is as good as theirs…

Let`s start with Liverpool.

Rafa Benitez may make just one further significant signing this summer, and that could well be a centre back. Once the purchase of Aquilani has been completed, Liverpool do not have the funds available to sign David Silva. It would take at least €28 million to prize Silva away from the Mestalla, and that fee is beyond what Liverpool are able to spend on one player at the moment.

It had been reported on Spanish television yesterday that Valencia had offered David Silva to Liverpool, but the Premiership club rejected a deal. Why would Valencia do that? The situation at the Mestalla remains something of a contradiction and unpredictable, but we can assume that they still need to sell and they are concerned that there is no money coming in from the sale of either David Silva or David Villa (despite the fact that they could be about to receive a sizeable sum from Barcelona if a deal for Juan Mata goes ahead). How many of us Liverpool fans can actually see us pulling off this move? Sure its a move we would probably all love to complete, but outside this dream scenario, is it really likely? In cold hard financial terms I don’t think we have the money available to even enter the bidding war. Our American owners are not averse to giving Rafa some spending money but its worth considering that the boss was slightly ripped off in terms of the signings of Aquilani and Johnson, the deals costing in the region of £38m for the pair does seem awfully steep.

Yes we got a nice sum of money for Xabi Alonso but how much more will be made available to the gaffer, not much I am guessing and maybe thats not such a bad thing. Maybe its time some of squad players got some real playing time, a chance to prove themselves. I am talking about the likes of Yossi Benayoun and Ryan Babel (yes one more chance to prove he was worth signing).

Also add into the equation that if Valencia really badly needed the money they surely wouldn’t leave any sale until the last minute at the risk of serious financial meltdown. So maybe we don’t get Silva, it’s not the end of the world…we can always try again in January?!
