Impressive Ajax man on Wenger Radar.
Arsene Wenger is keeping tabs on Ajax defender Gregory van der Wiel.
Gunners boss Wenger has sent scouts to spy on the 21-year-old right back after van der Wiel’s impressive recent form saw him break into the Dutch national team.
Van der Wiel first caught the eye when Arsenal were watching Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen before his £8.5million switch from Ajax to the Emirates in the summer.
Wenger is now monitoring who is also being watched by Atletico Madrid and Barcelona with Ajax putting him in the £7m bracket.
French international Bacary Sagna is established as Arsenal’s first-choice right-back but has endured a difficult start to the season and is currently battling with versatile Emmanuel Eboue for his place in the starting line-up.
Wenger wants to have strength in all areas and believes the 6ft defender has a bright future.
Wenger has already had success after signing Vermaelen and Robin van Persie from the Dutch league and he is developing a strong scouting network in Holland to keep tabs on players. (Daily Mirror)
Speculation has been rife in recent weeks that Bacary Sagna may be turned by recent interest shown in him from Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, more than likely just paper talk, so therefore a story linking us with another right back could well be just more wild speculation.
However that being said Gregory van der Wiel is a hot prospect who is getting his just reward for battling for three seasons to make himself first choice at the Amsterdam Arena and is now something of a regular in the international set-up.
Sagna has been a consistent performer since his move from Auxerre and it is highly unlikely that Wenger would allow him to leave if indeed the French international was interested in one, but that being said it could be handy to have up and coming cover in place as our right back area is less covered than the vast array of left back choices we have.
