New Middlesbrough manager Gordon Strachan may have slipped up on his first day in charge of the Riverside Stadium outfit, by inadvertedly revealing a list of transfer targets.
The 52-year-old former Celtic and Southampton boss was named as Gareth Southgate’s successor on Monday, signing a four-year contract with the North East outfit.
However, as he posed for photographs with the club’s supporters outside the stadium, he was clutching onto several pieces of paper that reportedly listed loan targets for the upcoming January transfer window.
According to the Daily Mail and Times, one of Strachan’s documents displayed a 4-4-2 formation of the new-look Teesiders, with the majority of positions filled with players from Premier League clubs, including Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere and Manchester United striker Federico Macheda.
Only goalkeeper Brad Jones, central defensive duo David Wheater and Sean St Ledger and winger Adam Johnson’s roles in the side appear safe, judging by the new Boro boss’ apparent plans, with Wolves striker Chris Iwelumo, Birmingham City goal-getter Kevin Phillips, Tottenham Hotspur full-back Kyle Naughton and Portsmouth midfielder Hayden Mullins also believed to be on the wish-list.

The reported list in full:
Federico Macheda (Manchester United)
Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)
Chris Iwelumo (Wolves)
Kevin Phillips (Birmingham City)
Kyle Naughton (Tottenham Hotspur)
Andy Griffin (Stoke City)
Hayden Mullins (Portsmouth)
Isaiah Osbourne (Aston Villa)
Marc Albrighton (Aston Villa) (Four Four Two)

This is amusing and I can’t wait to see Gordon Strachan approached about it in an interview as he is more than likely able to turn the thing on its head and make everyone present collapse in hysterics, such is the jovial and witty nature of the former Celtic boss.

However I would say that he knows what he is doing, the idea of getting a plethora of up and coming Premier League talent on loan could well be what Middlesbrough need to steal a march on their fellow Championship promotion candidates. Jack Wilshere would surely benefit from a spell at the Riverside and even more so as the club is under such an astute new boss.

Arsene Wenger will more than likely agree to such a deal for those very reasons. Who know’s, maybe this was all part of a cunning ploy by the wily Scot?
