Spurs boss baffled by mindless speculation!
Harry Redknapp has rejected reports he is weighing up a move for Rio Ferdinand, but concedes his view that the Manchester United defender is the best in the world.
A dip in form for club and country has put the centre-half under the type of scrutiny he has not experienced since the early days of his career.
Since moving to United he has shed a reputation for being too casual in his play to establish himself as one of the top defenders in world football.
But this season a series of uncharacteristic lapses in concentration has seen some newspapers speculate his days at Old Trafford could be drawing to a close.
It was Tottenham boss Redknapp that gave the player his big break in football when the pair were together at West Ham and while he’d love to have his former protégé back with him in the capital, he accepts there is scant chance of United being willing to sell.
“There’s no chance of him leaving there if he has any sense,” said Redknapp.
“Unless someone knows something I don’t know, he won’t be coming here.
“I speak to him and send him messages. For me he’s still the best centre-half in the world, he’s that good. Everyone has a blip.” (Sky Sports)
Well hopefully that nips this ‘story’ in the bud. For so many reasons there was clearly very little mileage in the original speculation linking Rio Ferdinand to White Hart Lane. Sure there was plenty of supposition, from the supposed irritation Sir Alex feels towards his misfiring defender to the fact that Tottenham could do with defenders who are not perennially injured to the fact that clearly Harry Redknapp knows Rio all to well from his West Ham days.
This will not be the last we hear of this ridiculous rumour but I think any sane human being knows that the likelihood of the England international moving from Man United to Tottenham is not a goer.
When injury problems are not blighting the Spurs squad, they have a pretty strong squad from front to back and in Sebastien Bassong they do at least have a young centre back who is coming on leaps and bounds whilst the likes of Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate try their hardest to avoid another knock.
Redknapp is probably thinking of a few new faces for January and no doubt there may be a central defender in his thoughts but I think we can rest assured that defender will not be Mr. Rio Ferdinand!
