Bundesliga hitman high up on Ferguson’s radar.
Manchester United are lining up a summer bid for giant Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko.
The Bosnian striker has caught United’s eye by blasting three goals in five Champions League games – including one at Old Trafford during the Reds 2-1 win earlier this season.
And he gets another chance to impress when United travel to Germany to take on his club in Europe this week.
United’s assistant boss Mike Phelan admits the Reds are keeping tabs on Dzeko and reckons he is perfect for the Premier League.
He said: “Any major football league would be interested in a player like that and I’m sure there are numerous clubs looking at him as a possible target.
“He has shown good form and he is a talented footballer. We are looking at talent all the time and we are in there with the rest of them. He has impressed because he came into the Champions League on the back of a very good season. He showed his threat in the game at Old Trafford and he continues to do that in the Champions League. He appeals because he is a tall boy and is skilful and in some ways he is an ideal player for the league in England.
“He has stature, his feet are good and he is producing some very good performances. I am sure everybody has looked at him and thought about him.
“I don’t think it is a surprise what he has done.” (Independent)
Mike Phelan appears to like Edin Dzeko and Sir Alex Ferguson has also expressed his admiration for the Bosnian striker and with Man United about to take on Wolfsburg tonight in a crucial Champions League encounter the Old Trafford boss will have a good chance to take a good look at the prolific forward.
Wolfsburg performed beyond their wildest dreams last season and are unlikely to continue to hit those highs and therefore will struggle to keep hold of their big names. Currently sitting in 8th place in the Bundesliga and likely to be eliminated from Champions League duties this week and therefore may see the likes of Dzeko, Grafite and Misimovic all being monitored.
Some may feel that the Premier League champions have more than enough options up front but Sir Alex may feel that the more the merrier and given that Dzeko is just 23 and is already showing such great potential and that could well put pressure on the first choice pairing of Rooney and Berbatov.
