Benitez eyes up audacious double swoop.
Liverpool ‘swoop’ for Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rafael van der Vaart
Liverpool could sign Rafael van der Vaart as well as his Real Madrid and Holland team-mate Ruud van Nistelrooy in January, according to a report.
With manager Rafael Benitez urgently needing reinforcements, The Sun reports that the much-touted loan deal for former Manchester United striker Van Nistelrooy will be agreed “in the next few days”.
But, although Liverpool hope to conclude a six-month loan deal for Argentina winger Maxi Rodriguez, the paper also reports that 26-year-old winger Van der Vaart could also be on his way to Anfield in a “dramatic double swoop”.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid move in doubt as Rafael van der Vaart signs on
The major sticking point in any deal for Van Nistelrooy, whose contract with the Spanish side expires at the end of the season, is the striker’s estimated £140,000 weekly wage packet.

Reports are circulating that suggest that Rafa Benitez is very close to pulling off one hell of a double swoop and bringing two top notch stars to Anfield. Liverpool can do with an injection of class into a seemingly average side that depends heavily on the likes of Fernando Torres to provide the goals and a proven finisher such as Ruud Van Nistlerooy could do a world of good and although the Dutchman would clearly only be a short term solution to the problem of paucity up front it would be a wise move to make that may well cost a bundle in wages but next to nothing in terms of a transfer fee as Real Madrid look to lighten their wage bill.
Rafael Van der Vaart was told by Manuel Pellegrini in the summer that he had a future at the Bernabeu but then left him to rot on the bench and has only been given more of a role due to recent injuries and the former Ajax man would be keen for a new challenge and would probably love to prove his Spanish employers wrong by making a move to the Premier League.
Van der Vaart would set Liverpool back around £11m and Ruud’s value is rated somewhere between £2-4m and as double deals go it would be a pretty sensible financially rewarding one and Rafa Benitez just needs to balance the books for such a deal by offloading some deadwood with the likes of Ryan Babel, Andrea Dossena, Andrei Voronin and Philipp Degen all being very much surplus to requirements.
