Sir Alex looks to sign French hitman.
SIR Alex Ferguson is ready to pounce for Karim Benzema – six months after being snubbed by the French international.
The United boss has been alerted by Benzema’s failure to make an impact at Real Madrid and is ready to offer him an escape route to Old Trafford.
Fergie tracked the former Lyon striker for three years before finally making a move last summer.
He saw the man, dubbed the new Zinedine Zidane in France, as the perfect player to add some sparkle to United’s squad following the £80m departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real.
But he was frustrated when the Spanish giants gazumped his £20m bid, signing Benzema for £25m in an incredible spending spree that also saw them land Kaka and Xabi Alonso.
Benzema has managed only five goals in 13 appearances this season and with Real ready to swoop for Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery, they would be open to offers for the 22-year-old.
Fergie even believes that he could even pick up his long-term target on the cheap for around the £20m he was prepared to pay last summer. (Manchester Evening News)
Its incredible that after just half a season Karim Benzema is seen as something of a failure at Real Madrid, such is the nature of the game at present. Manchester United were very keen to capture the impressive French international and Sir Alex Ferguson was said to be annoyed that he couldn’t persuade the former Lyon man to move to Old Trafford.
The 22 year old was scoring goals for fun in the French League but clearly scoring regularly in a higher league is never going to be as easy but given time I am sure that Benzema can make it at the Bernabeu but time is probably exactly what he doesn’t have as the La Liga giants desperately try to overhaul arch rivals Barcelona for serious silverware and that is where Ferguson could come in and pounce.
Even though Manchester United have Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov to call upon some may feel that a player such as the Real Madrid striker, is far more lethal and able to net 25-30 goals a season in a manner of Ruud Van Nistelrooy and indeed some are still not convinced by Berbatov.
