Birmingham have confirmed that they have agreed a £3million fee with Midlands rivals Aston Villa for midfielder Craig Gardner.

The arrangement was revealed by earlier on Friday and the St Andrews outfit have now announced that a deal has been reached.

Gardner’s switch to the club he supported as a boy is still subject to a medical and personal terms, but it is expected to be completed next week.

The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Villa Park and made 79 appearances for the club but has found his first-team opportunities limited this season.

Blues manager Alex McLeish has made no secret of his desire to secure former England Under 21 international Gardner due to his midfield versatility.

This could be just the move Craig Gardner was looking for and it could be a move that benefits Birmingham City whilst salvaging a career that was failing to continue in a forward direction at Villa Park. The former England Under 21 international hasn’t started a Premier League games this term and appears to be far down the Aston Villa pecking order and a move to near neighbours Birmingham City could help rejuvenate a career that has stuttered of late.

Alex McLeish has seen his St Andrews’ side go from strength to strength and after 14 games unbeaten it seems they can forget about any potential relegation battle and could be aiming towards a top ten finish and therefore can persuade top quality players to join the club and on his day Craig Gardner can be an excellent performer.
