Would Arsene Wenger break the bank to bring in more Emirates firepower?
The many would-be suitors of Wolfsburg’s much-courted striker Edin Dzeko may well have had a sharp-intake of breath at the news that the German club value their man at FORTY MILLION EUROS.
AC Milan, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal have all expressed an interest in the 23-year-old, but could be put off by the price.
The Bosnian forward has been regularly linked with a move to the Premier League with Manchester City joining, United, Chelsea and Arsenal in the early running for the player’s signature.
After shining in the Bundesliga, the Wolfsburg star expressed a desire to play in Serie A, with AC Milan his preferred choice of destination.
Dzeko first came to the attention of the Premier League’s big three when his goals helped Wolfsburg to their first Bundesliga title.
Dzeko scored 26 goals and provided an additional ten assists in 32 league games last season and despite Wolfsburg’s modest league form this season, the towering Bosnian has netted an impressive 14 goals in 30 appearances.
He also impressed in the Champions League group stages, scoring against United, however the player’s lofty valuation is likely to ward off any potential suitors.
An agent who claims to represent Dzeko, told Tutto Mercato: “Every day you read about ‘bombshells’ on the market, but for now it has stopped, also because the clubs have to see what they will do next year.”
“They cannot plan their futures in February. They plan a little later. One thing has been noted, though. Milan like Dzeko as do many other teams, but the player’s value has increased.” (Give Me Football – Official PFA Website)
Whilst its true that Arsenal have had rotten luck with injuries to key strikers, could they still do with a player of Edin Dzeko’s ability even with a clean bill of health? Arsene Wenger has reportedly stated his admiration for the Wolfsburg striker and anyone who thought that his efforts of last term were a flash in the pan should take a look at what the Bosnian has managed this term.
Even though last season’s surprise Bundesliga title winners have stuttered badly this season, currently in a lowly 12th spot, Edin Dzeko has still managed to 16 goals thus far and there are a host of clubs looking to snap up the 23 year old but could Arsenal persuade the hotshot to make the move to the Premier League and become a Gunner?
The north London side currently has excellent strikers in the form of Robin Van Persie and Eduardo but after that arguably they are not quite so well endowed with forwards. Up and coming Carlos Vela is still not ready for a regular first team place, Nicklas Bendtner has improved greatly but probably also not quite there. The likes of Sanchez Watt look like promising prospect, so maybe Wenger should spend some Arsenal cash on Dzeko?
A proven striker with a great deal of potential, but is he one worth breaking the club’s transfer record for? Perhaps not but Wolfsburg will not sell their star player for anything less so it could be one hell of a summer battle in store and if Arsenal fail to end their silverware drought this season then surely the Emirates fans will hope the club attempts to freshen up a squad perhaps still lacking that cutting edge and to dependent on midfielders to weigh in with the goods.
