Arsene Wenger ready to trump Manchester City to bring highly rated defender to the Emirates.
Arsenal are set to challenge Manchester City for the signature of German defender Jerome Boateng , according to the Sunday Mirror.
Manchester City were linked with 21 year-old Boateng during the January transfer window but at the time he hinted he would sign a new deal at Hamburg. However, Boateng is now stalling on a new deal and he has a 13 million Euro release clause in his current contract.
The Sunday Mirror reports that Arsenal scouts have been watching Boateng for the last month or so and that Arsene Wenger is looking for a new centre-back over the summer.
Currently, 35 year-old Sol Campbell is providing cover for first choice pairing William Gallas and Thomas Vermaelen , but the singing of Boateng would provide some serious competition in the heart of Arsenal’s’ defence.

Given Arsenal’s rapidly aging central defensive options it seems an Emirates move for a young talented centre back is in need and German international Jerome Boateng is one of the most highly rated defenders of his age group.
The Berlin born Hamburg man has been very consistent during the last three seasons and as a result earned his first international cap in October of last year and looks set to be named in the upcoming World Cup squad and is said to be very high up on Arsene Wenger’s wishlist.
The news that the north London side lead Manchester City in the chase of the towering defender will be seen as good news by Gunners fans looking for the right combination or youth and experience and Boateng may well offer both attributes and could well form a solid partnership with summer signing Thomas Vermaelen.
With seemingly a bit of money to invest in squad building Wenger will not baulk at the £11m valuation which seems pretty decent in todays inflated transfer market.
