Can someone explain to me why this West Ham man would be an Emirates target?
West Ham United striker Carlton Cole has leapt to the top of Arsenal’s wanted list after they were given first option on him.
Arsenal made their move for Cole after doubts over Marouane Chamakh’s switch from Bordeaux emerged.
Chamakh has been a long-term Arsenal target, but now they are ready to turn their attention to 12 million pound rated Cole.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has found it difficult with the team, as Robin van Persie has been out since Christmas, while Nicklas Bendtner, Eduardo and Carlos Vela have only been impressive in short spells, The News of The World reports.
Cole has injury problems this season, but managed to score nine goals in 18 Premier League games.
Meanwhile, West Ham co-owner David Sullivan is prepared lose many of his expensive players if the club is relegated into the Championship.
Sullivan has also said that the club’s debts have crept as high as 110 million pounds. (ANI)
Now I will be the first to admit that West Ham striker Carlton Cole is a lot better than he has ever been but for anyone to suggest that he would be a decent Emirates signing would be foolish in the extreme. The former Chelsea man may stand out for the relegation threatened Hammers side but would surely only find himself warming the Arsenal bench, at best, and more likely not make the first team picture at all if everyone at the north London club was fully fit.
Given that Arsene Wenger already has the likes of Robin Van Persie, Eduardo, Nicklas Bendtner, Carlos Vela and Sanchez Watt in his armoury can someone please explain to me the wisdom in trying to signing Cole? The England international is a cumbersome player who gives his all but doesn’t possess the kind of ability to make it at any top six side, let alone a side who is challenging for both a Premier League crown and a Champions League success.
The idea that Arsenal have the first refusal on the 26 year old will surely not excite any Gunners fan because such a signing would surely be a big mistake. I can’t see Wenger even considering such a move, not least because the Emirates side do not really play the kind of football that would even suit the powerfully built forward.
I am sure that most Gunners fans would like another frontman in their squad and whilst the likes of Edin Dzeko would offer something to the Arsenal side Carlton Cole would in my view be a massive step backwards. Some talk about the massive strides Cole has made since he left Chelsea and there is no doubt that he is an accomplished attacker but he will only really shine at a club where he would be considered a big fish in a small pond. Others talk about how he is now a top notch goalscorer but his overall record at Upton Park would suggest otherwise, yes over the past 18 months he has done well but his overall tally of 30 goals from 119 appearances is hardly something to get excited about is it.
I would be shocked if indeed Arsenal were going to make a move for the West Ham man and I can see Carlton sticking with the east London club even if they do get relegated.
