In all likelihood this could well be Gennaro Gattuso’s international swansong and the AC Milan veteran will be looking to go out with a bang and further prove his value as one of the most effective central midfielders in the modern game.

The 32 year old diminutive battler has spent a decade plus at the San Siro haunting rival midfielders and breaking down the opposition as well as effectively distributing the ball when needed. Gennaro has won just about all there is to win in both domestic and international football but every time he steps on to the field you can see it still means the world to him to come out on the winning side.

Probably more than just a little unhinged the former Rangers man always appears to be bubbling under the surface and ready to pop at any given moment. His likeness, both physical and mentally, to a Tasmanian Devil is uncanny.

Marcello Lippi will be looking to Gennaro to be the fulcrum in the nation’s efforts to retain the World Cup and with the defensive midfielder there will be more than a few bruised and battered players wishing that the talented pro hangs up his shin pads sooner rather than later.
