Rafa hopes for a swift exit for this Anfield flop.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed the club are looking to offload winger Albert Riera in the next fortnight.
The Spain international angered Benitez with his outspoken criticism last week, claiming the manager does not communicate with players and describing Liverpool as a “sinking ship”.
He was immediately suspended for several days by the club and it now seems certain Riera, who has a Russian wife, is likely to be farmed out on loan to a Russian club before the close of their transfer window early next month.
“We are working with different clubs trying to find a solution at this moment,” said Benitez.
“We will try to do some business if we can and see what happens.” (Independent)
Any bridges Albert Riera hadn’t burned down with his woefully inconsistent performances were duly torched when the Spaniard decided to mouth off to the Spanish press and I can wholeheartedly understand why Rafa Benitez wants him gone at the soonest opportunity.
The former Espanyol man has flattered to deceive ever since he arrived just over 18 months ago. He has had his good games, very few of them, but more often than not he has disappeared during matches and was only remembered when he dwelt to long on the ball or failed to pass to a colleague. He has some ability but he really isn’t good enough for a side with top four aspirations, and beyond.
Hopefully a deal can be done before he lingers much longer because he is not of much use to us now and is even less needed given the recent run of good form shown by Ryan Babel. It seems unlikely that we will make back all of the £8m we paid for Riera but we should hope to get a decent chunk of it and hopefully the Americans will allow that money to be reinvested in the squad rather than squandered to pay the interest on the loans they took out just to buy the club (don’t even get me started on that old chestnut!).
