Stamford Bridge’s forgotten man Joe Cole scored the opener for Chelsea at Old Trafford after good work from Florent Malouda to give the west London side a crucial lead over table topping Manchester United.
Chelsea were good value for their lead against a strangely subdued Manchester United having to cope without talismanic striker Wayne Rooney. Sir Alex Ferguson clearly must have read his side the riot act in the dressing room as the home side came out for the second half in determined mood.
Man United had a lot more of the possession after the break but were unable to get much in the way of shots on the target as Chelsea held firm.
Didier Drogba added a deserved, albeit miles offside, second after coming off the bench just ten minutes earlier as a replacement for the hard working Nicolas Anelka before United sub Federico Macheda pulled a goal back just two minutes later, although the Italian appeared to use both hands to do so.
