Anfield boss makes it clear that the Spanish wideman has no future at Anfield.
Rafa Benitez has moved to speed up the potential departure of Albert Riera from Anfield. The Spanish international upset the Liverpool boss with comments made in a radio interview and a move to Russia, where the transfer window is still wide open, seems a likely one.
“We still have some time until the end of the Russian transfer window so we will see what happens,” Benitez told the press.
“I didn’t see his [Riera’s] latest comments, but for me [to talk] on the day before a massive game – this way was disappointing.
“It was especially so when he was saying things that weren’t true, so I was really surprised. I was really disappointed with his timing and the comments themselves.” (Various)
The Anfield boss has until April 8th to secure a deal that sees the former Espanyol man leave for Russia and such is the perceived urgency of the move that Benitez is set to accept anything from a £6m fee to allowing the winger to leave on loan with a view to a permanent deal being secured at a later date.
With Ryan Babel returning to form, albeit up until his crazy sending off midweek, there is less of a need to keep Riera at the club where he could well be a disturbing influence on a side looking to secure a Champions League spot.
The 27 year old has stated since his outburst that he wishes to stay at the club but such comments may be too little to late and a move to Russia, where the likes of Spartak and Lokomotiv Moscow are said to be interested, may be the best deal all round.
