In the wake of Arsenal’s defeat at the hands of Barcelona Arsene Wenger is looking to strengthen his aging defence and has outlined potential moves for two up and coming centre backs. Reports from Germany believe that the Frenchman is looking to two young defenders who have been in imperious form in the Bundesliga this term, Borussia Dortmund’s Neven Subotic and Hamburg’s Jerome Boateng

The Gunners have a number of defensive options to call upon but with the likes of William Gallas, Mikael Silvestre and Sol Campbell all aged 30 plus there appears to be a need to bring in younger long term alternatives to add to the impressive Thomas Vermaelen who arrived last summer.

Talking of the need to bring in reinforcements the Emirates boss stated.

“It is a question that is very difficult to answer because at the moment that is not the priority. The priority tonight is to recover from the game. We have played quite well with a lot of character, as ever, but we made too many mistakes. Silvestre and Campbell are two good players. That is why the choice [of who to play] is difficult.”

“Might I be tempted to spend this summer? We are at a stage where we develop the players,” said the Arsenal manager.

“Last night in midfield we had Theo Walcott, who is 21, Bendtner up front who is 22, Samir Nasri, Abou Diaby and Denilson are 23, 22. I think they have shown some great qualities and will be stronger every year.

“We have to add something, that is for sure, but we have some time to think about that.” (Various)

21 year old Serbian international Subotic has been linked with moves to a number of Premier League sides and Borussia Dortmund appear to be resigned to lose the highly rated towering centre back, likewise Hamburg’s German international Jerome Boateng who has been in sparkling form this term which has seen him become a likely addition to the national team set up’s squad for the up and coming World Cup squad.

Arsene Wenger is set to be handed a large transfer warchest after the club posted good financial figures which the Arsenal boss is keen to spend in order to give his side more strength in depth in order to sustain pushes for Premier League and Champions League crowns.
