Emirates boss ready to take his pick of high quality keepers.
According to Italian website Tutto Mercato, Arsenal are in pole position to sign Fiorentina’s highly rated goalkeeper Sebastien Frey .
Apparently, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will fight it out with Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Juventus for the signature of the Frenchman.
Arsenal reportedly attempted to sign the 30 year-old in 2006. It is widely believed that Wenger is now looking for a top class keeper to at least challenge Manuel Almunia for the number one slot, as the Spaniard is not considered of the required standard to challenge for honours. Similarly, there are doubts over Lukasz Fabianski ‘s long-term Arsenal future.
Tutto Mercato describes the Gunners as being “in pole position” to sign Frey and speculates that it would cost around 10 million Euros to bring him to the Emirates Stadium. (IMScouting)
Reports in the German media are claiming that Arsene Wenger is preparing a bid for Schalke’s young goalkeeper Maunuel Neuer, Arsenal will face competition from Bayern Munich but one advantage in Arsenal’s favour could be the fact that Neuer lists former Arsenal keeper Jens Lehmann as his boyhood idol and there is no one better in Germany than Lehmann to give the young keeper the lowdown on Wenger and Arsenal. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is being linked with a summer move for German keeper Rene Adler.
The 25-year-old Bayer Leverkusen keeper is battling to be his country’s No.1 at this summer’s World Cup, and has impressed more than the Arsenal boss this season in the Bundesliga. (Give Me Football – Official PFA Website
It does appear that Arsene Wenger has a serious interest in these keepers! To be fair there are a fair few decent up and coming goalies being produced in the Bundesliga and its no surprise that two are attracting so much attention whereas 30 year old Sébastien Frey has a wealth of experience and could be a more stable option.
The Emirates boss has apparently lost all faith in Manuel Almunia and doesn’t rate the understudies currently at the club, albeit Vito Mannone is probably just a little too young to be given the first team duties just yet. Of the three named by these sources Manuel Neuer is nearest to being the finished article and has had a great season at Schalke where he could well help the club to their first domestic title in over 50 years.
All three are very good custodians and have a bright future ahead of them and may well be interested in a move to the Premier League and Wenger will reportedly be given a hefty sum of money to spend in the summer and one would imagine that the keeping area is one that he dearly would love to resolve.
Who would Gunners fans like to see between the sticks next season?
