White Hart Lane keeper wanted by Bundesliga giants.
Tottenham face a battle to keep once-derided but now heroic goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes at White Hart Lane.
Gomes, whose outstanding form was a feature of Tottenham’s recent victories against Arsenal and Chelsea, is being targeted by Champions League finalists Bayern Munich.
Gomes has two more years of his contract left at Tottenham, but Bayern want to replace Hans-Jorg Butt, their current No 1, next season.
Gomes, along with Schalke’s Manuel Neuer, are the principal candidates.
Gomes’s transition to life in the Bundesliga would be eased by the fact that he remains close friends with his former PSV team-mate Mark van Bommel, the current Bayern captain.
Munich coach Louis van Gaal was an admirer of Gomes in his previous job as coach of AZ Aalkmaar. (Daily Mail)
Heurelho Gomes recovered from an awful start at White Hart Lane to become an invaluable member of Harry Redknapp’s over achievers and it may well be the manner in which Tottenham stood by the former PSV Eindhoven man that may prevent the Brazilian from considering a move to the Bundesliga giants.
Redknapp will not want to consider losing the 29 year old and even though the Champions League finalists are apparently willing to spend big it seems highly unlikely a move would be agreed. A lot may depend on whether the north London club manages to secure a Champions League spot.
Meanwhile the club are still looking for a back up goalie and have earmarked Joe Hart as a potential signing but could well find it difficult to persuade Manchester City to sell to a direct rival.
