Hamburg defender Dennis Aogo and Bayern Munich youngster Holger Badstuber were the surprise names in Germany’s provisional 27-man World Cup squad.
Coach Joachim Low also named Bayern veteran Hans-Jorg Butt among three goalkeepers after first-choice Rene Adler was ruled out with a rib injury.
Former Stuttgart captain Thomas Hitzlsperger was not included.
The squad, which will contest a warm-up match against Malta on 13 May, will have to be cut to 23 players by 1 June.
“We have lots of young players without much international experience, but they have the quality and so it is not easy to say which four will go home,” added Low.
The 23-year-old Aogo has won 24 under-21 caps, while 21-year-old Badstuber, who can play left-back or centre-back, has impressed during Bayern’s impressive Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns this season.
Germany’s provisional 27-man World Cup squad:

Midfielders: Michael Ballack (Chelsea/ENG), Sami Khedira (Stuggart), Piotr Trochowski (Hamburg), Marko Marin (Werder Bremen), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich), Christian Trasch (Stuttgart), Mesut Ozil (Werder Bremen), Toni Kroos (Bayer Leverkusen).

As always Germany will be one of the big favourites for the tournament and Joachim Low’s men were pretty impressive in qualifying although their recent defeat in a friendly at home to Argentina resulted in more questions than answers.

Champions League finalists and soon to be crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have an unprecedented seven player in the 27 man squad which goes someway to showing just how in form some of the German players will be going into the finals next month.
