England World Cup Squad 2010: Battle of the Keepers

COS contributor Josh Dean ends his series on those players who Fabio Capello should take to South Africa and those who should be forced to watch from the comfort of their obscenely expensive sofas!

We finish the series off with the goalkeepers.

I don’t think there is any question really that the three to go will be Hart, Green and James.

The other English goalkeepers that could get a spot are Chris Kirkland, Ben Foster and Paul Robinson.

I think the best out of the three who probably are not going is Chris Kirkland. In 32 games, he made 89 saves and had 8 clean sheets. He has little international experience but his performance with a shaky WIgan defense in front of him has definitely given him a case for a spot.

David James has the most England experience and I think he will make the squad rather comfortably. The commanding giant has only 3 clean sheets this year, but I don’t think you can put him to too much fault, as he made 82 saves as well. Although David James isn’t spectacular, he’s one of the best three we have.

Next the man who is considered the starter, Rob Green from West Ham. The agile shot stopper has made some spectacular saves this season, and has made a stunning 120 saves, with 8 clean sheets. He started most, if not all, the qualifiers in Europe with Capello, so he definately has a spot on the plane, but Joe Hart certainly has made a case for himself.

Hart is energetic and has quick reflexes. He made 129 saves and kept 10 clean sheets while on loan at Birmingham City, and according to rumours Wenger is looking at the youngster. But since he is a youngster and has a lack of experience, Capello may play it safe and go with Green, which is what I think will happen. Hart was voted by fellow players as Goalkeeper of the Year from the BPL, and he was nominated for PFA Young Player of the Year. I think Hart should start, but I don’t think he will.

So I chose. Rob Green, Joe Hart, David James.

My final squad:

GK (Green, Hart, James)

RB (G. Johnson)
CB (Terry, Ferdinand, Dawson)
LB (A. Cole, Baines)
Utility Back (Brown)

RM (Lennon, Bentley)
CM (Gerrard, Lampard, Huddlestone, Barry (if injured, Hargreaves))
LM (A. Johnson, Walcott)

ST (Rooney, Crouch, Heskey, Bent)

Utility (Milner)

On Tuesday Capello will name his preliminary squad. I have made my case and while I know there is little chance Bentley will make the squad I am anxious to see how many I got right. His preliminary squad will consist of 30 players, and on June 1st he will cut it down to 23.

Thank you all for reading. Lets wish Capello and England the best of luck.
