Emirates outfit linked with plethora of new blood, it can’t all be true…can it?
Sunday Times journalist Duncan Castles has tipped Arsenal to sign Mark Schwarzer , Per Mertesacker and Felipe Melo during the summer transfer window.
All eyes will be on Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger this summer with Cesc Fabregas widely expected to return to Barcelona after telling the Frenchman he wants to leave the Emirates.
The Arsenal manager reportedly has 40 million pounds available and Mark Schwarzer is the latest goalkeeper to be linked following the likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Robert Green and Joe Hart.
Per Mertesacker is considering leaving Werder Bremen and with 60 caps for the German international team, the 25-year-old would bring a host of experience to the Arsenal backline.
Arsenal were linked with a move for Brazilian midfielder Felipe Melo last summer but missed out to Juventus. The defensive midfielder struggled in 2009/2010 and is expected to leave the Turin giants after the World Cup. (Sunday Times as reported on IMScouting)
The Mirror says that Arsenal are bullishly pursuing Valencia midfielder David Silva, much to the chagrin of Real Madrid. The ailing Spanish giants, who finished the season trophy-less, have coveted the 24-year-old Silva for months – as have Manchester United and Liverpool – but the Mirror says we shouldn’t be surprised if Arsenal land the attacking midfielder for around £17m, paid for by offloading the injured Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona. Now whilst there is a fair amount of summer transfer rumour speculation doing the rounds it is worth noting that the lions share of this report comes from a respected source, namely the Sunday Times, so it is worth scraping under the surface of this one rather than just consigning it to the bin marked “good bit of fun but not going to happen”.
The idea that Arsenal would sign Mark Schwarzer is an interesting one. Clearly at 37 he is no spring chicken but then in goalie years thats more like 32 and the Fulham man has just had one of his best seasons to date, helping his side to the Europa League Final no less and kept 20 clean sheets to boot. Wenger is reportedly looking for a keeper and perhaps with the impressive Vito Mannone coming through the ranks there may only be need for a short term option.
Per Mertesacker is a player who was linked with a move to the Emirates on this very website some time ago and one can understand why the German international would be a target. At 25 the giant Werder Bremen man has already amassed 60 German international caps and has nearly 250 top flight appearances to his name. Solid customer and the kind of non-household name you can see Wenger opting for. Also he wouldn’t cost the earth.
Felipe Melo is a more frequently linked player and one who could also fill a potential void. However my feeling is that the Gunners will trust the role of defensive midfielder to Alex Song next term and quite rightly so as the Cameroonian has impressed greatly.
Then we come to the least likely of the bunch, David Silva. The Valencia man is always linked with a move away from the Mestalla but it seems highly unlikely that the La Liga side would sell Silva and David Villa in the same transfer window as to do so would be like telling their own fans that they have no ambition and even less cash.
